Biography

Bettina Wenzel composes and develops vocal pieces and intermedia performances

Her research in extended voice techniques started with attending vocal training courses at the „Centre Artistique Roy Hart“ (Malérargues/France) between 1992 and 2000. Derek Rossignol, Ian Magilton, Jonathan Hart Makwaia, Noah Pikes and several other founding members - whose teachings are based on the groundbreaking discoveries of Alfred Wolfsohn(1896 -1962)- gave the first impulse to her personal vocal research.

Her compositions are a constant endeavour into vocal sounds, that reach beyond the limitations of the human voice.

In Paris, Aix-en-Provence, New York and Cologne, she studied contemporary dance and dancetherapy at the Dietrich-Langen-Institut(graduated 1992).From 1990 to 2001 she lived and worked in Paris, moved to Cologne in 2001. Besides her artistic work, she studied Phonetics at the University of Cologne from 2001 to 2003. From 2003 to 2006 she worked for the Cologne Society of Contemporary Music (KGNM e.V.). In 2005, she attended a workshop with Michiko Hirayama at Maerzmusik, Berlin.

Since 2000 Bettina Wenzel has been presenting her vocal work in Austria, Belgium, Czech Republic, England, France, Germany, Norway, Portugal, Serbia, Slowakia, India and the United States.

2006 and 2016 Artist-in-Residence at Hotel Pupik, Austria. 2009 Artist-in-Residence by Kunststiftung NRW and Goetheinstitut Mumbai during 6 month in Bombay, India. 2016 Artist-in-Residence in Mexico DF ,during 6 weeks development of a site specific workat pre-columbian Cuicuilco Pyramid, Alumnos 47.

As improvising musician she has collaborated with many artists among them hans w. koch, Thomas Lehn, Michael Vorfeld, Manual Mota, Simon Nabatov, Josef Novotny, Achim Tang, Joker Nies, Andreas Wagner, Lawrence Casserly and many others.

In 2001 she founded the "duo &2" together with the composer and sound-artist hans w. koch

In 2005 she founded "multimode, Ensemble für Experimentelle neue Musik" together with Lucia Mense and Tiziana Bertoncini.
